The Joys of Traveling

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

One of the joys of traveling is wandering. Sometimes aimlessly, and sometimes with purpose. It’s something that helps me work on being present and being attentive, because I get to stumble upon views like this one and you can’t do that with your face glued to your phone.

I’m known among my friends for the one that walks too fast, the one who always walks into the restaurant first and always knows where to go next and always has a plan (yep that’s me!). So being alone on my travels is a welcome respite to let my legs and let my mind wander.

Movement always gives me the best ideas. I can’t think while sitting still, so couple wandering around aimlessly with the vivid sights of a new locale and that creates a recipe for creativity.

Creativity is inspiration in motion so grab a backpack, a good pair of shoes, and see what you stumble upon.

Thoughts On Cultivating Relationships

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Been thinking really hard about relationships and connections between people lately. I’ve grown a lot in my own life, but I still have a lot to learn.
I believe that I’ve learned a few things up to this point. Here’s some concepts I’ve picked up. And sharing this hopefully does as much for you as it does for me.

1) Relationships are not about transactions. But as people, we search for things in other people. And sometimes we see things where we want to see them when they’re really not there. Other people are not necessarily looking for anything in return or something for those things they find in you, but you have a connection because you share overlapping focus areas. So if you want to build that connection with someone amplify those overlaps, and see how much deeper your connection can go.

2) When dealing with other people in relationships, you have to remember they are going to surprise you every step of the way, because they think completely differently than you do. You can’t control how they react to something you propose, but you can control how you react and how you adapt your approach. Crazy is trying the same thing over and over again expecting different results. So adapt to the update in the situation. Change your tactics. Ask yourself do I completely understand the other person and their situation. Chances are you don’t and that’s why you’re frustrated because you haven’t matched your approach with the other person.

3) Get rid of expectations. Focus on your domain and what’s in it. Have expectations of yourself and not the other person. Cultivate multiple options that are going to provide you a solution to your problem or dilemma. I love playing the what if game. Because if I can imagine the worst case scenario in my head, when it becomes reality I welcome it because I’ve already thought through it, and I have 5 more contingencies ready to go behind that one.

Do you agree or disagree with any of this?

Change Your Environment

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

If you’re not getting the results you want, change your environment. We are products of our environments and the people in them. And it’s 100% our choice.

So choose environments that give you all the good vibes and inspires you to find more in yourself and in other people. Find places that make you push a little farther, dig a little deeper. Because out there on the fringe, at our limits is where greatness is found.

People to See, Things to Do, Wine to Drink

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Not letting Monday slow me down this week. Too many things to do, people to see and wines to drink.

I know you’re all waiting for my Italian wine dump. Don’t worry, it’s coming soon...

In the mean time, pour yourself a glass and take it all in.

How Do You Find What You're Looking For?

Apr14_2019.jpg

How do you find what you’re looking for?

I think sometimes we look in the wrong places.

Sometimes we fail to properly frame the problem and figure out what it is we are searching for.

Is it something we just stumble across one day as we wander?

Or is it something that we come to realize over time, through a process, that we have it in us.

Venice last weekend pushed the limits of my perceptions, and my realities. I have a new respect for inspiration and the creative process, because I think through that I’m able to slowly find a piece of myself every day.

What are you searching for right now? What limits will you push to find it?

Siena and Florence

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

There once were two knights, one from Siena and one from Florence. They both wanted to claim land for their kingdoms, but everyday that would fight over how much land between the two cities each would get. Until one day someone told them to settle it the old way. To settle the dispute one rider from Florence and one rider from Siena would each take off at dawn and race as fast possible towards the other town and wherever the two met would be the new border between the two kingdoms. Being in medieval times, there were no alarm clocks, so each rider would take off when the rooster crowed in the morning. The Florentines used a hungry black rooster and Senesi chose a white well fed rooster. So the next morning the black rooster having not slept crowed well before dawn, leaving Florence with considerably more land.

Siena, you may have lost the battle with Florence, but you’ve won my approval. With Osterias (Restaurants) and Trattorias (Family run restaurants) on every corner, Enotecas (Wine Stores) stocked with the richness Tuscan wine, you’ll always be #1 in my book.

What things do you consider when rating a new town or travel destination?

Travel: Italy

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Back in Europe! Nice to be here again - this time I’m traveling in Italy!

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

When it’s time to get off the grid but you still need to stay connected.

So getting all vulnerable today, traveling for the first time with no checked baggage and only one carry on!

Luckily I have an awesome 45L Arc’teryx kitchen sink that everything will fit in. It’s the perfect size because everything fits buts is still carry on approved.

Traveling to Italy today to link up with some good people there and drink all the Italian wines again. Oh and this isn’t everything that’s in there. I have a secret surprise for you that will come out of the bag Saturday night.

What’s your favorite piece of travel gear?

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

No matter how many times you say “Goodbye”, it never gets easier. I’ve literally said goodbye to these people 100s of times with all of my comings and goings.

But as much as I leave, things never change and I always have a seat waiting for me at their table. Couldn’t have asked for better way to spend 20 hours in Siena.

Goodbyes now complete, it’s on to the next one and keep moving forward. Until next time.

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Stories are our life blood. They shape our world view, and make us who we are. That’s probably why in some weird way I try to collect stories. Not just stories about things I’ve done, but stories about other people, and their causes that they champion.

Having experienced a lot of new, fluid moments in the last 96 hours that moved me and shaped some new perceptions for me, and fortunately I was able to capture some of those moments. I’ll be weaving those moments into stories that I hope captivate and give people something to grab a hold of and soak up like I was able to this past weekend.

Over the next week I’ll be sharing some of those stories with you, and also I’ll be trying some new formats and mediums that I think will help tell a better story.

P.S. There will be wine 😏🍷 .

I Love This Time of Year!

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

I love this time of year. For lots of reasons, but mainly because the winter frost has started to wear off, and when everything seemed like it was falling apart for those first few days of the new year, if you look hard enough all the pieces slowly start coming together.

There’s so many opportunities out there beyond our doorsteps. Feeling super pumped about all the great things that are shaping up right now.

What are you pumped about for this year?

Coffee Mug Reminders

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Soaking up these slow Saturdays while they last.

I have a small coffee mug collection, I like to think they are little stories from my travels and various periods of my life.

I find myself choosing a specific mug based on the mood I’m in.

Today it’s all about the grind. This mug was a gift from my good friend Travis Chapell. I think for me it serves as a reminder that the work is never done.

While traveling is a lot of fun, so are Saturdays like today where I can take a step back, reflect on the past few months and look at the bigger picture.

What’s your favorite coffee mug and what does it remind you of?

Stop 4: DFW

Love seeing people that just fill me up when I see them and their next steps in life.

Headed home tonight on the last leg of my adventure, and couldn’t of asked for a better way to spend two weeks.

Solo travel doesn’t have to be lonely. But absolutely can be everything you make of it.

Thanks for traveling with me these last two weeks. I hope you gained something from following my travels. Can’t wait to see what my next adventure holds. In the meantime, don’t forget to keep calm, and carry on.

Travel: San Francisco

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Made it to San Francisco then went north to the mountains of Sonoma. Didn’t let a little rain stop me from crushing a short little hike in the morning while channeling my inner Jack London to get ready for all the Sonoma wines!

Dont worry, about to drop some wine knowledge bombs. I know that’s what you’ve all been waiting for...

Travel: New Orleans

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Couldn’t have asked for a better time watching Endymion than at my Godmother’s house, with a Dia de Los Muertos themed soirée, in the middle of a block party. On to Mardi Gras Day 3!

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

New Orleans you never disappoint. There are no words that can quite describe it so I’ll leave you with the wise words of Anthony Bourdain:

“In America, there might be better gastronomic destinations than New Orleans, but there is no place more uniquely wonderful. … With the best restaurants in New York, you’ll find something similar to it in Paris or Copenhagen or Chicago. But there is no place like New Orleans. So it’s a must-see city because there’s no explaining it, no describing it. You can’t compare it to anything. So, far and away New Orleans.”

Travel: NYC

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Stop #1 in NYC

Got caught up in the fast pace today of the city that never sleeps. The fast past forces you to stay one step ahead in movement, direction and conversation.

So I’ll always soak up moments like these where I get to take a pause and enjoy good food, good wine and genuine conversation.

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Day 2 in NYC:

Sometimes it’s just nice to get lost in the crowd.

Getting to ponder all the destinations these trains in Grand Central Terminal will take you helps create possibilities.

But the tough part is sometimes identifying which trains and which paths are not for me.

How do you say no to certain opportunities and determine which doors to close?

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Day 3: Learning how to level up in NYC.

Cocktails with lunch and deep conversations help immensely.

The city has treated me exceptionally well, I hope I have done the same.

One last day, so going to soak up all this sunshine, all these city views, all the good drinks and food, and all the moments that pass us by.

Do you live in the moment enough, or are you always looking at the next one?

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

There’s nothing quite like having a white winter wonderland when it’s time to say good bye to an amazing city.

NYC was everything I needed it to be, and so much more. I’ve learned a lot more about myself from authentic interactions with other people here.

What surprised me the most was how easy it was to connect with people, both friends and new acquaintances alike.

Here’s to a great trip and great memories!

Vicarious Traveling: I Want to Take You with Me!

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Hey there! I just wanted to take a moment to get your permission to fill your feed over the next two weeks with a journey I’m taking.

I’m on a different kind of adventure, more like a mission. I’ll be traveling to four locations in the U.S.

I chose each location for specific reasons, and to gain a new insight or perspective about myself and my mindset in each location.

But along the way I’ll be sharing with all of you what I’m seeing and learning about myself and each new environment as it relates to creating adaptability and perspective.

I’ll be creating fresh content to show you the process I’m going through right now that in turn helps me re-create myself every day of this expedition into the known to uncover the unknown in myself.

Will you travel with me?

How to Deal with a Slump

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

I didn’t want to post anything today. Sometimes we get into funks, moods, and slumps that if we let them drown out our hope.

But I didn’t want to let whatever I was feeling affect what I needed to do. I had to separate my emotions from the action I needed to take.

You can find a similar correlation with travel. While you can’t control what’s going on in your surroundings in a new environment or location you’re traveling to, you can control how you processes and interact with the new locale and people. You are in control of what’s happening inside your head.

Taking action like planning a new trip, getting on the plane, walking out of the hotel, Airbnb, or even tent at the new destination is the first step towards regaining control.

So here’s to tomorrow, because tomorrow is a new day full of hope, that will always offer more than we think it does today. Pour that cup of coffee and begin, now.

Travel: Pushing Your Comfort Zone

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Two more weeks till travel day and I get to soak up awesome places, like this!

Travel isn’t just about seeing awesome places like this one (one of my all time favorites by the way).

It’s also about pushing your comfort zone into the unknown. Unknown places, unknown people, and unknown experiences. Here’s to embracing more ambiguity on my travels.

Solo Travel and Intrinsic Motivation

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Making my list right now of places I want to go this year, which has me reflecting on not just my trips from the last year but from the previous 2-3 years and how far I’ve come to embrace solo travel.

Solo travel is not easy. It’s hard to think about putting yourself out there and going to a completely foreign country by yourself where you know absolutely no one.

But solo travel is one of the best things you can do to develop into a better person, because when you travel alone the fun you have is only limited by how the number of strangers you talk to. How much you grow as a person is only limited by the number of books you read, and your creativity is only limited by the number of pages you write.

Solo travel forces you to find intrinsic motivation instead of extrinsic motivation which can be found in our everyday lives in the environments where we are comfortable in.

So get out there this year and learn what makes you tick while seeing new lands, experiencing new cultures, and eating new foods and in the process you’ll create a new you.
