A Little Altitude, A Lot of Perspective

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Sometimes you need a little altitude to get some perspective.

Went for a nice trail run (more like trail walk with over 1800 feet of vertical) off of Highway 1 on Friday which did so much for my mind, my body, and my spirit.

We can't let isolation, or the current situation bring us down.

After looking at some of the photos I got, this one really spoke to me, and how you can faintly make out the trail ahead, and tipping the hat to the mountains to come.

There will still be many trials and tribulations (and hopefully trails) ahead, but I'm especially hopeful on a day like today that the path will continue to be carved out of the side of mountains that we all climb together.

Happy Easter, for He is risen!

Focusing on the Small Things

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

This is a trail by my house that I hit everyday, either on a run, a ruck, or just a walk. Sometimes twice a day.

What’s fun to see is how this landscape looks different every day, and at different times of the day.

Also it’s fun to see how the weather changes this view. I was reading somewhere that to make it through an isolation like this, it helps if you track something, something you see constantly, and can notice the small nuances of change.

This trail has shown me those small nuances, and has served as a daily reminder that life goes on, and change is a part of that. I don’t know what changes are coming next, but I do know this view right here is not going to fundamentally change, at least not in my lifetime.

Sometimes it’s hard to keep perspective while inside the four walls. Having a place to physically go to keep a grip on reality has helped me immensely and kept me grounded. I hope it does the same for you.

Safe adventures this week to all.

EAX Camp and Organizing Priorities

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

A little late on this post, but wanted to really digest all the different nuggets we picked up from EAXCamp a few weeks ago. Taking action should be a core ethos of our message and story. That's why when I found out Evolution Athletics and Jeremy Kane were holding a camp about taking action to get to the next level not just with fitness, but also with lifestyle, I knew I needed to be there.

I also saw it as a final "see you later" to a gym that significantly impacted my view of fitness, lifestyles, and to a greater extent, life.

The EAX Camp was everything I needed right now, as I am going through a period of significant transition in my life, and it gave me an opportunity to think about what I want my lifestyle to look like in my next chapter.

The Camp wasn't just about optimizing my fitness habits, but more about taking some time to think strategically about my fitness and lifestyle. Here was my favorite takeaways from the entire two full days of camp:

  • What are three priorities in your life right now?

  • What are three things you are doing for those priorities right now?

  • What are three things that can get in the way of those priorities?

  • What can I do to get those things out the way of my priorities?

What is interesting to note with these lifestyle focusing questions is how you need to take the time in the first place to work through each of these questions, and how every single activity of your day either supports or takes away from these priorities.

Also, it's ok if these priorities change. That's why it's great to take the time while like at camps like these to think long term about your priorities, fitness and lifestyle. Just be intentional with what you add into and take away from your life. What are your three life priorities right now and what are you willing to do for them?

Gruelling Sunday Sprints

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Sunday work!

12 x 400m Sprints at 1:40 pace. For every one over time 10 burpees.

My times: 1:36, 1:34, 1:38, 1:34, 1:32, 1:32, 1:33, 1:32, 1:34, 1:35, 1:34, 1:33

Jeremy Kane always knows how to program challenging work for me and helps me work on my weaknesses.

Running has always been an area where I have opportunities for massive improvement. I really enjoyed this workout because just like life, failing to meet the standard has consequences. It’s a mental exercise for me to not focus on the results of failing, and focus more on the rewards of winning.

This workout was also one of the more gruelling ones I’ve done in the last couple of months because of the discipline it took me to finish it. The challenge for me is the waiting. Running is the easy part. Running on pace, and resting the appropriate amount of time is something I continue to improve my discipline in.

Couldn’t have asked for a prettier day to do it, with full sunshine and blue skies! Hope everyone gets outside today and soaks up some fresh air and sun!

P.S. Got my running shoes in finally. No more running miles in Metcons and getting made fun of…!

This is My Church

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Sunday Church.

Grinding in the hotel gym before getting back to the travel grind.

This is where the work gets done. In the hotel gym. In the empty field out back. In the garage. It’s not always glamorous, getting to workout in a state of the art facility. Which makes me super grateful for when I do get to go to work in a place that has all the equipment for my workout that day.

But I think it’s about doing what you can when you can, given your time and gym constraints. I also think it’s about the physical transition from one location to another, no matter how basic the gym is. For me that physical transition into a gym also creates a mental transition. I get to turn on a different mode and hone my capability while I train. Training that other side of me gives me mental clarity and focus to seize the day. It gets me ready for whatever is next: traveling, grinding, or just sipping some wine.

I use to get so focused on getting it all done. I would come up with master plans for the hundreds of exercises I would get done. But I soon realized how unrealistic that is. Now I’ve learned it’s about just little steps everyday. That’s why for me it’s so important to physically go somewhere to train. To switch that other side of me on and go to a different place mentally. And the more you do it, the faster you’re able to get yourself into that mode mentally and physically.

So while Sunday’s are great for resetting and recreating your inner peace for the upcoming week, I challenge you to also get that training time in and find the inner peace that comes from walking into the gym. Keep grinding!

Full Gym VS Empty Gym

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Some people love an empty gym. They love walking in and having full reign of the entire space. I think that has it’s place, but personally for me I love walking into a gym that’s full of energy, full of people. Because I know being around them is going to push me to crank out more and give it my all.

But we can’t always have that. Sometimes we have to walk in the gym and workout to the sounds of the crickets (sometimes literally…). We have to go and put the work in. No one is watching.

That’s a true limit. Can you do it all, can you give it the same intensity in an empty gym as you can when all eyes are on you?

Evolution Athletics

May1_2019.jpg

Loving how being apart of a like minded community improves not only you but the people around you. I’ve been on the ground here in a new place, in a new country, with a new group of people, and I’ve already gotten a reputation of being the gym guy. But I believe because I have associated with other inspiring athletes such as the likes of Evolution Athletics, that when I go somewhere new I just naturally ooze all the goodness from my home turf. People notice you putting in the grind, working hard and not sacrificing your personal standards despite the current constraints on the ground. .
Plus when you get a call out from the boss, that carries some weight. I’ve literally had some one new now every day cross me in the hallway and ask me “you headed to the gym bro?” And i reply of course, just like everyday. But this the part I love, they reply back with “go crush it man.”

We can be the change we want to see in our organizations and environments. But it takes influencing the culture around you with hard work, consistency and building a reputation of getting results, not just with fitness, but with excellence in every endeavor. That is how you disrupt the status quo.

Thanks to Evolution AthleticsJeremy Kane, and Ryan Stayskal for giving me the tools to help me build a culture of not just fitness, but excellence while in faraway lands.
