Personal Development

Thoughts On Perspective and Context

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

If we want to transform something in our life, we have to walk the edge.

Because on the edge is where we get to see the combination of both worlds: the one we are currently in and the one we are transforming into.

This gives us perspective.

The perspective to see what we are leaving behind and what we have to look forward to.

With perspective comes context.

Why is context so important?

Because it’s the difference between doing something bold and doing something brash.

It’s the difference between doing something that will get us to the next level and doing something that’s only going to hold us back.

Context is the medium that helps us put to use the information we have to use.

Whether we are telling a story, making a decision or just starting a new path, without the right context, we lose meaning.

And when we lose meaning, we lose purpose.

Walking on the edge and finding new edges everyday that push our perspectives to change, gives us the context we need to have meaning and fulfill our purpose.

Safe adventures and living life on the edge this week.

In Search of Grand Cru

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Constantly in search of Grand Cru.

In French wine making, they have this term.

It’s called Grand Cru.

Only the best vines, planted in the best locations, with the best soil, with steep elevation, that get the best sunlight and produce the best grapes can be called Grand Cru.

There’s something to be taken from this concept, excellence.

The French realized early on that only the best conditions will produce the best grapes

I think we can use the same logic in our own lives.

If we want to produce our own best grapes, we need things like a lot of sunlight (good vibes), established roots in good soil (the environments we choose to put ourselves in), and changes in our elevations (constantly pushing ourselves to new levels).

Yea sure, you can make ok grapes with all the basic elements and a little sunlight. But once you go to make the wine, it’s not going to taste as good as it could be.

We can choose to seek out those conditions that are going to produce Grand Cru grapes in our lives.

And just like the wine, I’d be willing to bet when we produce Grand Cru in our lives, it tastes pretty good!

Be a Craftsman of Life

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Dove into the world of craft foods in countries #23 and #24 this past weekend, Belgium and Luxembourg!

Around every corner was an opportunity to expand the palate.

The Belgians are craftsmen in every sense of the word. From crafting of their chocolates to their waffles, even their pommes frites (aka French fries, don’t worry I used to not be in the know, trust me, ignorance is bliss my friend), they use precision in everything they produce.

We don’t have to be chocolatiers or Belgian waffle makers to be craftsmen.

We get to choose what we want to become the best in the world at, and if we keep persisting, and continue to hone our craft we too can become craftsmen.

Seek out some true craftsmen in your travels this week!

Personal Growth and Being Present

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Growth is about movement. It’s about forward progress.

I can’t tell you how many times in the past I’ve tried to just zone out. That’s the easy button.

Just go to some fictitious dark place in your mind where you don’t have to actually feel the work.

Or just turn on Netflix and not have to feel the weight of the situation you’re in.

But all that’s doing is preventing you from achieving your full potential.

Because if you really want to become the best version of yourself, I challenge you to truly be present in every moment.

That means counting every rep in all your workouts, especially when they are tough and all you want to do is turn the music up high and drown out the pain.

Or at work when all you want to do is not be there and focus on something pleasant.

Or in your relationships when all you want to do is not deal with a situation or talk to someone new.

See the only way you’re going to get better is by dealing with the shit right there in front of you, by squaring up with it and putting in the work to learn something from it and not let it devour you.

Crush some demons this week by not letting them get a foothold in your life, and achieve your true potential. Grind early, grind often, safe travels to all.

Reach Your Highest Altitude

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

How do we know we’ve reached our highest altitude?

We can’t always choose the challenges we want to face, but we do get to choose how we face them.

Exploring the Alps in Switzerland 🇨🇭 last weekend helped me gain a little more altitude for my challenges.

I hope you can find your altitude and follow the path that you’re meant to be on.

Safe travels to all, and keep exploring your path!

Five Areas of Self Care to Consider for Self Improvement

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Self care is not a luxury, but a responsibility.

If you don’t take the time to do the the things that put you in the zone, and give the ability to bring your A-game, are you really doing your best? .

What is self care? How do we build time into our busy schedules for it?

For me, it’s hitting five areas each day during the week, and using the weekends to spend more time developing in specifics areas .

My five focus areas are: .

1) Physical - Taking care of my body through diet and exercise.

2) Mental - I love taking time to focus and find more clarity on my goals and tasks. This could be as simple as checking my to-do less and ruthlessly cutting out things I really don’t need to do, as well as visualizing what success and progress look like for some of my goals.

3) Social - Spending time with connecting people I care about, and making new connections as well. I think people forget the second part a lot of times. If you’re not making new connections, you’re going to get stagnant and not see growth. How can we be innovative in our disciplines if we aren’t innovating our relationships

4) Emotional - This one is important. We need to check in with our emotions and really dig deep into what is causing our emotional patterns. This is the only way we can change. By establishing a baseline, and charting progress we can over time change our outlook on life and really see the glass as half full.

5) Spiritual - Finding time everyday to connect with our faith and spiritual side gives us so much in the form of our purpose, and also gives us hope for a better future. It’s where we find grounding, and meaning in tough situations.

Try intentionally spending time in each of these areas everyday this week, and defining what each area means to you. Don’t be surprised when you reduce stress, anxiety, and gain focus, clarity, and consistency in your endeavors.

How do you define self care?

Bittersweet Blog Post/Bittersweet Riesling

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Bittersweet today, kind of like this glass of Riesling, closing the chapter on one notebook, and starting a new one tomorrow.

This notebook has been through a lot with me, and has been there to help keep my mind right and stay focused on the tasks at hand.

I’ve been fortunate enough to spend some time around some high performers, high achievers and highly effective people (read “not me” lol), and what I’ve noticed is their use of a notebook to keep their thoughts organized.

The notebook will never lose its place in the office or in the field.

Couldn’t think of a better way to sum up 18 months of using the same notebook than sipping on some bittersweet Riesling to toast the last chapter and christen the new one.

Cheers to good notebooks and good wine.

Positive and Negative Attention

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Hey listen to this. You need to hear this. If you are going to do epic shit, if you’re going to push the limits. You’re going to start getting attention. Some of it will be positive and some of it will be negative.

It’s how you choose to react (not reacting is a reaction) that matter for you, your journey and your story.

If you keep your faith in yourself, in why you’re doing what you’re doing and God, you cant go wrong.

But yes you will fail. Everyday. But those failures over time add up to great wins and successes.

So enjoy the process of learning how to really open up your voice and let yourself be heard, of finding new ways to express yourself, and new ways to be you.

With each new failure we learn something new about ourselves that can’t be learned by sitting down, being quit and not taking a risk.

It’s on the fringe, in our uncomfortable zone that we truly become ourselves.

Here’s to being more true to myself and expressing who I am, and enjoying the process of figuring it out as I go.

What To Do When You Don't Know What To Do...

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

There are moments in our life where we are faced with daunting tasks and great ambiguity. Where we don’t know what to do next.

These moments can define our lives, and set us on courses we never expected. The question is what we do in those moments.

Exploring champagne gave me a chance to explore my courage and how I define it for myself.

I challenge you to do the same. If you need a place to start, checkout my stories I’ve complied from champagne. I’ll be dropping some of my thoughts on courage and the thoughts of others.

If we don’t take opportunities to start the conversation, and we take for granted our freedom to engage in the discussion, then we’ll lose it. Let’s use our courage for good and define what it means to ourselves.

Becoming Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

While we can’t always reach for a little liquid courage, when we find ourselves in uncomfortable situations we can rely on our past experiences and confidence in our abilities to navigate our way through the ambiguity of the situation.

Exploring the French countryside last weekend was uncomfortable in a lot of ways. The French have a certain way to do everything. And if you don’t do it that way they let you know.

But once you push past that initial discomfort, and transcend your comfort zone, that’s where the going gets good.

I’ve found just having a little courage to ask a question, stop at the place that catches your eye, or not worry about making a mistake opens you up to a whole new host of growth and creates opportunities to peel back some layers of the people you find yourself in those situations with.

That’s real courage. Taking chances failing daily so you can learn from them.

While champagne helps you take that first step, if you don’t have courage to stay uncomfortable you may easily take two steps back into your comfort zone.

But like any other skill, we can train ourselves and cultivate our courage, and our ability to not only operate in uncomfortable situations, but to enjoy it and thrive in it.

We can create our own form of liquid courage, take more risks, and get more comfortable with the uncomfortable.

Changing Mindset: As Simple as Changing Your Outfit?

Some days you have to be able to switch certain modes on and off.

And sometimes it’s easy because you literally go through the motions of changing clothes, from pants that say “I’m ready to do my walkabout” to suited up.

That physical transition helps you make a mental transition. Just the same as changing venues or locations. But sometimes you don’t have that luxury.

Sometimes you have to go from one type of engagement or meeting to another and have to completely change your mindset or approach because what was true in the first meeting or engagement isn’t necessarily true in the second.

Do an assessment of your audience everytime you walk through the door and tailor your approach to the people right then and there in front of you to communicate your message and achieve your objectives.

How do you calibrate yourself when going from one meeting to the next? .

Golf at Ocean Reef Club

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

It’s Friday. That means it’s time to finish strong and follow through. Love this photo from last year playing at Ocean Reef Club.

Growing up I played golf. That was my sport. The thing that my dad would always drive into my head was the follow through.

Follow through in your thoughts. Follow through in your words. Follow through in your actions.

I think that’s how we follow through in our relationships, and our pursuits and our causes.

How are you following through today? .

Traveling Taught Me: Abundance Mindset

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Travel has taught me so much about not only the world we live in, but about myself. I go to places and pick places that help me create new parts about myself.

I love going to new places and learning about the history, the culture, and the wine, but more importantly I enjoy figuring out what these new places are teaching me about myself.

New environments give you new stimulus. They help your neurons and synapses fire in new ways. They create neural pathways on how you think and perceive the world.

Finding out these new things about yourself will do amazing new things for you that you never thought possible, because you can’t think that way yet because you’re not there in those new environments yet, adjusting how your synapses are firing and creating new pathways.

So let’s blaze some new trails in our brains and in our lives and see what new ways to look at the world we can come up with. That is true abundance.

How has traveling taught you an abundance mindset? .

How to Win the Game of Life

It took me a few weeks to really digest the flashy displays of opulence and luxe at Monte Carlo. But Monaco has a rich history and has played its part in European history. It’s not just for filming great scenes for stunning movies like Goldeneye or Ironman 2.

I think at its very essence is the spirit of CHANCE and OPPORTUNITY. I’ve noticed a lot of times we find ourselves in situations where we are presented with an opportunity. It’s usually someone crosses our path. And we are faced with a DECISION. Either pay no attention to that person or opportunity and keep going the way we were going. Or make the most of that moment and take ACTION.

Whether it’s talking to the stranger on the airplane, stopping an influential person you see in the gym for a quick connection, or going up to a speaker at an event, we all have OPPORTUNITIES placed in front of us.

The question for me is can I identify the opportunities presented to me, and position myself to take advantage of those opportunities to ENHANCE MY LIFE and my organizations.

There’s nothing to be gained by saying nothing, walking the other way, or just being a face in a crowd. Here’s a few tips I’ve used in the past to identify opportunities and EXECUTE on them:

1) If this person has captured my gaze for an extended period of time. Whether it’s admiring from a far, or locking eyes there’s a reason why your attracted to them. It could be their VIBE or GLOW, or you just feel something in your gut. Listen to your INTUITION and make a move. Say hello, introduce yourself, give your elevator pitch.

2) Now your job is to listen. Hear their story, show empathy and understand their position. Use this time they’re communicating to look for an opportunity to build a connection and relationship. Ask clarifying questions and help them identify to you what some of their challenges are right now and show you’re CONNECTED in your SHARE of having issues or struggles as well.

3) FOLLOW UP. Either phone, email or social media, strengthen an in person connection with follow up. This will increase your chances of something fruitful coming from this opportunity. I also love making notes. I’ve found iPhone contacts to be a great place to record my notes from a new connection like “likes ice cream” (who doesn’t?) and is a dog person (must love dogs).

Turn your chances into connections, and create more opportunities by seizing the right moments, and I like to think that’s how we win the game of life.

Waking up on the Wrong Side of the Bed...Monday Morning Mood.

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Making the most of my marvellous Monday in a magnificent mood. But it didn’t start that way.

It started off in a not so glamorous mood. Whether it was sleep or just not vibin’ right this morning, definitely woke up on the wrong side of my twin sized mattress I’m sleeping on right now, which you would think is hard to do because it’s a twin…

So I did what I knew would shift me back into at least a neutral state and did an hour of cardio this morning in the gym. Still wasn’t 100% but was turning the tide back to where I wanted to be.

Then I got to the airport. Had a guy in front of me totally lose it in security and had me waiting 15 min to get my bag because it had to be searched. But I recentered and put some good jams on, and chose I was going to have an awesome day. After all, everyday is a good day to travel!

We can choose our mood and the mode or mental state we want to be in. And for me, having cues like a certain song or a cup of coffee helps.

I’d love to know what helps you get into the mood or mode you need to be in. Let me know what works for you, because you never know who will read it and needed to get that idea so they can learn how to shift their mood! Happy grinding this week.

Creative Inspiration in Cannes

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

Can’t believe I got to checkout Cannes last weekend. All the sights, sounds and smells really fuelled my creativity and captivated my imagination.

Creating is about finding what you find in yourself, and using that to drive your creative process. The deeper you go down the rabbit hole, I think the more you find out about you and the better you get at creating.

Creating doesn’t just soothe my soul, it fires it up. It allows me to speak to my core.

Being able to write and create allows me tell a story, and just like anything else, the more you write, the more you create, the better you get at it. You learn how to pick better words over time to more adequately describe, people, places and situations.

Even more so, you learn to pick up on the subtleties of transferring emotions or feelings to the audience. To show them through the story the full range of emotions you are trying to capture.

I believe this builds connection with your audience. And that connection is powerful. Here’s to more creating in the world.

P.S. checkout that selfie stick photo bombing my picture on the left! Just getting a taste of my own medicine…

Embracing the Raw Aspects of Life

therealkrislevy_2019-05-20_11-19-03_59578966_463729961036777_2119023038681283457_n.jpg

Raw views like this are the views I look for. Sometimes we need to be real and be raw with ourselves. That’s one of things that I loved about România last week was its raw Beauty. What’s even better than România’s raw beauty is its people appreciation for it. They embrace their city and country with open arms and are full of life.

We should aim to do the same with the raw sides of our lives and embrace it and not be afraid to accept it and share it with others. The more we accept our raw sides of our selves the more we can keep it real.

I like this raw side of us because I think to some it also makes us look like savages. And we should all aim to be savage. I want to savagely chase my goals and dreams, and savagely grind hard day in and day out in pursuit of the mission and objectives.

Time to embrace our raw selves and become savages in our pursuits of bettering ourselves and our missions in life. Not only can we gain more power through exposing our raw and savage selves, but we can inspire others to do the same and change an organization for the better that relentlessly accomplishes its missions and objectives on time and on target.

Stay savage this week!

Transformation

therealkrislevy_2019-05-18_14-47-29_59927336_1036038799917984_8762438742379600142_n.jpg

Don’t conform to your environment, but transform out of it to become the person you need to become. To become the person that your people need you to become. To evolve into the person you want to become. To transform into the person that your destined to become.

How do we transform? Sometimes we get tied down or constrained by our emotions and feelings. When those feels hit you hard, ask yourself whether you’re going to conform to what your environment is making you feel, or if you’re going to make a decision and rise above it like a Phoenix to transform into the person this experience is making you.

Next time those feels attack, accept them for what they are, as temporary and refocus on what’s important now (WIN) and watch those feels pass right on by. Because if we remember where we are going, we can remind ourselves not take detours that will set us off course.

That’s how we transform. Just piece by piece in each little moment of every day. Making one decision today that’s a little better than the decision we made yesterday that leads to a little more action than the action we executed on yesterday.

It may be Saturday, but there’s still plenty of work to be done.

Are You Motivated or Driven?

therealkrislevy_2019-05-14_19-45-32_60662547_421954125306407_4015266497954581653_n.jpg

Welcoming the weekly grind today with open arms. Working on that fresh perspective this week and making a mindset shift for the next few months. Trying to prioritize a couple new projects, and still make time for things that are important to me, keep me level headed and are life giving.

In this process I’m working on my yes and no list. For me, the challenge has never been coming up with a list like this, writing the actual list is the easy part. It’s the habit of habitually checking that list before I commit to any engagement that’s the hard part. Anyone else feel me on this one?

So the process of creating my priorities is very fulfilling, but is super short lived. I think David Goggins said it best, in that you have to ask yourself are you motivated or are you driven? If you’re motivated, anyone can create a list of priorities. If you’re driven, you consistently look at those priorities before making any commitments. That’s where long term fulfilment comes from, just like sticking to a diet or workout plan. Each individual workout or commitment isn’t fulfilling. It’s the long term process of prioritizing and committing to only those things that are in line with your priorities/consistently choosing foods and exercise consistent with your goals. Our word is only as good as our actions that follow through on our word. Don’t make a conscious effort, make a consistent effort of checking those priorities.

How do you weigh the things that give you life and creates mental space in comparison to the things that you have to do? .

Relish the Little Moments

Kris Levy Wine and Fitness

This shot right here for me is slowly turning into the money shot. Because no other moment is as good as the moment you’re in right here right now. Learning to relish in these little moments because they are peaceful, and ground me before my day goes underway and I lose focus of the peace I had in the morning.

So take these moments for what they are to gain your mental focus and clarity for the day, then go on the offensive. Attack everything that’s on your agenda with relentlessness, violence of action, knowing that you’ll hopefully have an opportunity to reset tomorrow with another one of these moments that will recharge you and reset you and get you ready to attack again.
